ONE HORNED UNICORN MYTHICAL WHITE ANIMAL
A mythical white animal, familiar from heraldry and said
to have the legs of a buck, the tail of a lion, the body and
head of a horse and a single horn in the middle of its fore-
head. This horn spirals to a sharp point and was said to
be sensitive to poison. Tales of the Unicorn are well over
2,000 years old, for Ctesias first described it in 400 B.C.
The old royal arms of Scotland are supported by two
unicorns and when James VI of Scotland extended his
rule to England in 1603, a unicorn supplanted the red
dragon of Wales on the English shield beside the lion.
Tales of rivalry between the lion and the unicorn are
famous in English nursery rhymes and classics like Lewis
Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass.
